This course material lists OSHA’s (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) rules, which apply to all stairways and ladders used in construction, alteration, repair, painting, decorating, and demolition of worksites. The material lists the rules applicable for various types of ladders, such as stepladders, portable ladders, and fixed ladders rules for stairways used during construction, temporary stairs, stair rails, handrails, and midrails is also discussed. The material is based on Stairways and Ladders, A Guide to OSHA Rules Publication No. OSHA 3124-12R 2003.

At the conclusion of this course, the learner will have a better understanding of safety measures related to usage of stairways or ladders during construction work, as well as an understanding of the following topics:

• Requirements for cages for fixed ladders
• Requirements for wells for fixed ladders
• Requirements for mounting ladder safety devices for fixed ladders
